If you're reading this I can only assume you didn't fly away to another dimension or some silly thing... remember that today was supposed to be the FOR REAL, I AM NOT KIDDING THIS TIME end of the world. May 21st was just a trial run. Maybe the Republican candidates and their debates have been the Tribulation™...
Okay, I know most of us have done the usual things to make money, especially early in our working lives. Jobs like waiter/waitress, bagging groceries, cashier at the corner dime store...
I also know that these days some of us would like the opportunity to do one of those jobs again - to just have a job; any job.
But that's not the point this evening. I would like to know what you have done for a paycheck that could be considered unusual or quirky...
(But please, if it was illicit, illegal, or uncomfortably icky, maybe you should keep the details to yourself...).
Otherwise... what have you done to make money?
I put together a list of my own a few years ago, titled "Can't keep a real job". Although I have proven I actually can keep a job, some aspects of my random paid employment over forty years only looks believable on the dust jacket of a trashy novel.
As my first job at the age of sixteen, I was hired as a pickle grader. And what the hell is a pickle grader, you say? A pickle grader determines the value of every cucumber the farmers bring in their bushel baskets to sell to the folks who make pickles.
Smaller cukes bring more money; if they get too big they aren't worth anything. And cukes grow so fast that what might be a rather valuable Number 1 on a Tuesday at 6AM could be a much closer to worthless Number 4 by Wednesday morning...
There is a manual for this...
The sizes (diameter) for pickle cukes are:
No. 1 - 1" to 1 1/16"
No. 2 - 1 1/16" to 1 ½"
No. 3 - 1 ½" to 2"
No. 4 - 2" to 2 1/8"
Anything bigger than that is a cull, and gets thrown into the field behind the shed...
We had to be at work by 6:30A, but all your work is basically done before 1PM or so. If you're a basically lazy teenager that getting up and being at work thing might be tough, but hey... you can wear shorts and flip-flops to work, and have your afternoons free...
It was really sort of fun as a first job...
Now... your turn! What strange episodes are featured in your employment history?
